Program Description

Event Details

The Sun is a rather ordinary star, but one on which our very existence depends, providing warmth and energy to life on our planet.  Our star experiences an 11 year cycle of sunspot activity, and this is the year of the solar maximum!

During this solar observing session, we will use up to three types of telescopes to view the sun in white light (which shows sunspots) as well as in the light of hydrogen, which shows surface detail as well as solar prominences and flares normally only visible during total eclipses. A spectroscope will allow us to see the spectrum of the Sun, which tells us about its chemical composition.  If the sky is exceptionally clear, we might even spot Venus!
