ESL: Online Low Intermediate Reading Group

ESL students will read Whirligig by Paul Fleischman. This book is a modern American novel about a teenage boy named Brent who makes a terrible mistake that changes his life. To try to make things right, he travels alone across the United States and builds wooden wind toys called “whirligigs” in different towns. On his journey, Brent meets new people, learns from his experiences, and begins to understand himself better. The story is hopeful and shows how one person’s actions can bring meaning, healing, and kindness to others. Reading group participants are expected to read up to 12-15 pages per week.
